Billy Henderson, Leon Henderson, David Hawkins Charged in Service Station Robberies

At about 12:30 a.m., William Edwards was employed at the Parks Service Station in Long Beach. A brown Chevrolet station wagon pulled into the station. Billy Henderson, Leon Henderson and David Hawkins were the three occupants of the vehicle. Leon Henderson, the driver, got out and asked William Edwards for a fuse for the car. William Edwards went to the office to get it. Both Leon Henderson and Billy Henderson followed him inside. David Hawkins remained standing next to the open door of the car. When William Edwards reached for the box of fuses he was grabbed from behind and hit on the head. As he was falling he looked up and saw that Billy Henderson had a revolver in his hand. David Knowles Charged with Robbery in Redondo Beach

At about 6:30 p.m., David Knowles and Caryl Chessman entered a clothing store in Redondo Beach. There was no one in the store except the owner Melvin Waisler and Joe Lesher, a clerk. David Knowles asked to look at overcoats and Joe Lesher showed him several while Caryl Chessman sat nearby and Melvin Waisler walked around the store. The accused stood in a well-lighted area, and Melvin Waisler and Joe Lesher testified that they were able to get a good look at them.
